Description:

This private tour of Jewish Rome will make you discover the history and places where the Roman Jews lived for more than twenty two centuries.

The itinerary will start in the heart of the lively Jewish quarter with its kosher shops and restaurants where you can find the delicious food specialties of the Roman Jewish cuisine. Your private guide will tell you about the origins of the Jewish Roman community and the history of this ghetto that was formed in the Renaissance time.

You will see the magnificent Great Synagogue built in 1872 after the unification of the Kingdom of Italy when the Italian Jews were granted citizenship (if you wish it will be possible to visit the inside). Right in front of the synagogue stands the Porticus Octaviae, the remaining part of a great temple build by Augustus. A few steps away and we will reach the Theater of Marcellus a spectacular ancient Roman building that could originally host an audience of 11,000 people. It then became a fortress in the Middle Ages and a private palace in the 16th Century.

Crossing the Fabricius Bridge we will reach the charming Tiber Island and from there arrive in the Trastevere neighborhood. This area of Rome is characterized by narrow streets where trendy bars and art galleries go side by side with artisans’ laboratories and small mom and pop shops. We will then reach the very center of this lively neighborhood, the square of Santa Maria in Trastevere with the church bearing the same name.

This private tour will be led by a guide form our team. All our guides have academic degrees in art history or archaeology and most often also a PhD level specialization. They are all officially licensed by the Municipality of Rome and most important of all they are nice and friendly persons to spend time with.  This tour is often led by Jewish guides, please let us know if you would like having one of them
